Sunday 29th December – walk **** - NT – Polesden Lacy – sunny.

After a relaxing, quiet night at Sayers Croft, nothing to do with the bottle of Bucks Fizz we left after breakfast and headed the National Trusts Polesden Lacey just outside Dorking to break the journey home up! Apparently, it was the weekend party house of Edwardian socialite, Dame Margaret Greville who enjoyed collecting gemstones who bequeathed much of her jewelry to the Queen Mother and is still worn today! Contemporary artists Neon have re-imagined the rooms of the house taking inspiration from Greville’s diamonds, rubies and pearls so we were looking forward to seeing something pretty naff and we were not disappointed! Our first problem was finding a parking space in the muddy car park as half of Surrey was here! That done we headed down to the house in brilliant winter sunshine, another lovely big mansion with impressive views over rolling countryside:) It was a big mistake wearing sunglasses as we entered the house to near darkness and the biggest Christmas bauble we have ever seen, followed by some odd decorations in the billiard room and then a pearl stream coming out of a fireplace and then the best of all, a large room full of large balls all over the floor and the couple in front of me took the words out of my mouth when he said this must be the ‘ballroom’ !!!! A bit underwhelming really so we left and headed out into what we like the best, the grounds and gardens. Through the rose garden to the lovely kitchen garden with a sweet little cottage to the sunken garden past the house to promenade along the long walk and back through the copse to the van. It was then a case of the final drive home north around the dreaded M 25 which was very slow, we do hate driving in this country. Mag took over when we reached the A 12 and we were treated to the most amazing sunset on arriving back in Felixstowe:)
